JChem Linked Structure Field

The JChem Linked Structure Field is similar with JChem Structure Field and allows the user to view structures stored in other fields. This field is useful when structures are already stored in lists and the users wish to view their generated image or wish to view structures using other settings.
As a source field for the JChem Linked Structure Field the users can choose from:

  • Text Field
  • Multiple lines of text (must be a plain text)
  • JChem Structure Field

How to use the JChem Linked Structure field in a SharePoint list

Linking to a text type field

Step 1: Select an existing custom list or create a new one.

Step 2: Create a new text type field with a specified name.

Step 3: Select the following additional column settings:

  • Require that this column contains information: No
  • Add to default view: Selected

Step 4: Save the new column.

Step 5: Create a JChem Linked Structure type column with a specified name.

Step 6: Select the following additional column settings:

  • Require that this column contains information: No
  • Add to default view: Selected

Step 8: Save the new column and go back to the list view.

Step 9: Create a new item in the list with a specified title.

Step 10: Enter "CCC" string in the text type field of the new item

You can see the JChem Linked Structure column on the New Item page but currently it is a read-only field.

Step 11: Save the new item and go back to the list view.

The new item is displayed in the list. "CCC" string can be seen in the text type column and the structure of the normal propane is displayed in the Linked Structure column.

Step 12: Open the above created item for edition.

Step 13: Modify the string in the text type field: from CCC to O and modify the title of the item.

Step 14: Save the modification and go back to the list view.

The structure has been changed in the JChem Linked Structure field. Currently the structure of water can be seen.

It is also possible to edit the structure directly in the JChem Linked Structure column.

Step 15: Modify the column settings of the JChem Linked Structure field: select the "Allow Molecule Editing" option (Structure Image Settings section).

Step 16: Save the modification and go back to the list view.

Step 17: Open the existing item for edition.

The integrated structure editor (Marvin Applet) is available on the Edit Item page in the JChem Linked Structure field and the structure of water is on the screen.

Step 18: Delete the existing structure and draw a new structure (e.g.: naphthalene) by using the integrated structure editor. You can also modify the title of the item.

Step 19: Save the modification of the item and go back to the list view.

The structure of naphthalene can be seen in the JChem Linked Structure column and the string has been changed in the text type column: from O to C1=CC2=C(C=C1)C=CC=C2

Step 8: Select the following structure related properties:

  • MRV molecule format

You can keep the default settings of other properties but of course you are allowed to modify them as well.

Step 9: Save the new column and go back to the list view.

Step 10: Create a new item in the list with a specified title and with a structure in the JChem Structure type field.

You can see the JChem Linked Structure column on the New Item page but currently it is a read-only column.

Step 11: Save the new item and go back to the list view.

The new item is displayed in the list. The same structure can be seen both in the JChem Structure type column and in the JChem Linked Structure type column.

Step 12: Modify the column settings of the JChem Linked Structure field: select the "Allow Molecule Editing" option (Structure Image Settings section).

Step 13: Try to save the modification.

You are not allowed to save this modification. It is NOT possible to edit the structure directly in the JChem Linked Structure field if it is linked to a JChem Structure type field.
